Video Running Analysis

What is Video Running Analysis?

In video running analysis, often also commonly referred to as video gait analysis or slow motion video gait analysis, a healthcare professional reviews a video of the runner running.  By slowing down the video, the professional is able to view the nuances of the individuals gait and identify potential factors that may lead to decreased performance, pain, or injury over time.

What are the Benefits of Video Running Analysis?

Why would someone want a video analysis of their running?  The research shows that your running mechanics affect how well you perform as a runner and what injuries you’re susceptible to.  For most chronic overuse injuries, it can be very difficult to self-diagnose what exactly is causing that pain in the knee, that pain in the foot, that pain the back, that pain in the rear…  Getting a video analysis of your running gait is the best way to find even the most minuscule asymmetries and movement patterns that are setting you up for working harder…or worse yet: for injury.

How does Video Running Analysis Work?

Unfortunately, up to 77% of all runners will be injured. Having an injury in the past is one of the biggest risk factors for injury again.  Fortunately, we can predict what injuries may happen to a runner in the future by assessing their running technique. We can also prevent injuries from happening in the first place by assessing running technique and providing preventative measures.  A video gait analysis is our most effective tool for assessing running technique, including stride length, impact forces, the biomechanics of your body and how those movements are either helping or hindering you. A video gait analysis involves assessing your whole body movement patterns including any symmetries, body and leg angles that are outside the normative values from current research, stride length, stride frequency (cadence) and foot/shoe assessment. After thoroughly analyzing your running gait from all angles using slow motion video and motion analysis software, as well as basing the assessment on the most current running research litature and expertise from video running gait analyses, a trained physical therapist will be able to give you hypotheses on why you are feeling pain (if you are), and how to modify either your gait or an intervention program for home that can decrease your pain and decrease future risk of injury. If you are not currently injured and/or have not had injuries in the past and you are just looking to see how to become a more efficient runner, the video running analysis is perfect for you. By analyzing your running gait and assessing all of the variables above, recommendations can be developed specifically for you based on how you are currently running to decrease excess movements and strain and increasing your mechanical efficiency to make your running more efficient, more enjoyable and possibly faster.
